Stratford-on-Avon Part 1: Anne Hathaway’s House

Who is Anne Hathaway? For those of you that don’t know, Anne Hathaway was the wife to William Shakespeare, English poet, playwright and actor.

Anne and William were married in 1582, when William was a minor of just eighteen years old and Anne was twenty-six. Anne was three months pregnant when the marriage took place. Anne came from a family of good social and financial standing and she would have been considered a “catch” at the time, especially for someone like William Shakespeare whose own family had been financially ruined.

The cottage of the Hathaway family is one of the most quaint places I have visited in England.

The cottage is surrounded by a really lovely English garden with lots of fruit trees.

The cottage is in a wonderful state of repair and does contain a fair amount of the original Hathaway furniture. I always love to look at kitchens…
