Happy Samhain

Happy Samhain to all. May your trick or treat bucket always be full and may this new year find all the blessings you need and more.

I wanted to write a little about our family traditions on this day.

We always set an extra place for the spirits of those who have left us and toast them with some juice, or some alcohol. lol

Every Samhain and Midsummer we leave a plate of food out for the faeries. This tradition has been in our family for generations. Some bread, sweet cakes, honey, dried fruit and a little alcohol. We set the plate out at night time and thank the faeries for all they have done.

Trick or treating or guising?

Guising is what we call it in this country. There is still bobbing for apples and in parts of Scotland there is a weird traditional game where a piece of bread is dipped in treacle and suspended from a string. The trick is to get a bite of the bread with your hands tied behind your back.

So to wish you all good cheer and happiness over the coming year. Prayers for those who are in need. Special prayers and help for those at Standing Rock and those who fight for the right to clean water in Canada.

  1. I’ve always wondered – what IS treacle anyway – besides a titmouse favorite. And I always forget how to pronounce Samhain. Watching both The Munsters and the Adams family as a kid I remember fondly, however. Thanks for the memory.

  2. Thanks for sharing your traditions. I love the tradition of putting a plate out for the fairies. I’m going to start doing that with my grandson. We have a fairy tree in the yard, so they are making their presence known already 🙂

  3. Regards to the Clootie Dumpling lol. It was a Christmass tradition and one at New Year. Recipes were guarded closely, true. I have a very old recipe and the trick to a good clootie dumpling was the muslin cloth. It must be coated in butter then flour and then the mixture poured in, tied up with string and steamed in a pot. It gives it a skin that is delicious.
